Art Deco

Art Deco design is the perfect combination of modernism and craftsmanship. It’s an interior style that flourished in the 1920s and is now regaining its popularity. Inspired by the bold geometric shapes and bright colours of Parisian Fauvism, Art Deco combines sleek style with exquisite craftsmanship.

Distinctive and bold aesthetic, exaggerated curves, playful shapes and an often sweet pastel colour palette – it’s amazing that Art Deco design has gained such popularity in contemporary interiors, from “serious” design fans to those, who is just interested in trends. It is a movement that in some form influences other styles too.

Art deco style is a perfect connection between classic and modern, it does not shy away from exclusive elements and luxury. Here is no room for simplicity or minimalism, on the contrary, attention to details and interesting colours are just some of the features of this style.

A graceful, eye-catching detail on a modern armchair, a rippled surface on a glass cabinet or increasingly popular windows or doors with decorative strips – pleases and at the same time gives restrained austerity and ornate. So what are the key features of Art Deco design and how can we achieve a look that reflects it?

The Genesis Of Style

Art deco (short for Arts Décoratifs) is an art style that includes painting, architecture and interior design. It was born in Paris around 1920 and developed gradually replacing the modernist style in new interiors. Art Deco is characterized by rich colors, bold geometry and decadent details. This style is the opposite of the avant-garde art of that period, which challenged to find meaning and beauty in often unconventional images and forms.

Colours

In the 1920s, the economy was booming, and vibrant colours came to symbolize the prosperity of those times. The Art Deco colour palette includes from deep greens to deep purples, the colours are expressive and chic, but not overdone. Also, white or sandy is combined with burgundy, red, pink and even intense blue. Additional details are usually shiny gold or silver.

The Details

Details play a very important role in the art deco style – these are the small things that usually only few people pay attention to. Functional objects are tried to be infused with artistic touches. Thus, in the case of this style, the saying “the devil is in the details” is fully justified – consistency and repetition give the entire interior a specific character.

Materials & Furniture

Materials such as marble, natural leather, red wood, gold, silver, bronze are popular in Art Deco style. This style also loves velvet and shiny fabrics. A table made of marble, glass or wood can become the highlight of the interior. Furniture often has unconventional shapes. To emphasize the contrast angular shapes with sharp edges meet curves and rounded shapes.
