Abstract Art. What is the perfect place for hanging it?

  • AROUND
  • 2022-09-25

There is so much beauty in the world that it’s no wonder we want to capture some of it and bring it home. Chaos as peace, randomness as predictability, knowing and not knowing – are the charm of abstract art. This might be a reason for loving it.

Sometimes it’s important to escape from the reality inside. Abstraction exists independently of true views in the world, it creates a visual language to be looked at, contemplated, not spoken.

However, in order to truly reveal the abstract art at home, it must be properly presented. We’re not just going to talk about measurements and cords and hammers and nails here. We will try to explore how to present abstract art to discover the beauty and wonder it can reveal.

Walls And Colours

Sometimes we are so fascinated bout a piece, that we buy it without even thinking of ‘where will we hang it’? Only after bringing it home, we realise that we don’t have a suitable place for it. You might think ‘it doesn’t matter, because abstract art is simply meant to stand out from its surroundings and draw attention to itself’. But combined with the wrong background, it can draw attention to itself for the wrong reason: it doesn’t look particularly great, it doesn’t blend into the whole space, which is not the desired result of home decoration.

Rooms in white and black are the safest choice and offer the most freedom in terms of bringing new colours. However, a non-standard background will add more depth and will emphasise the abstract work of art.

Emphasize

Abstract art is eye-catching and has a tendency to ‘stand from the crowd’ because it presents visions that we are not used to see. However, as your collection grows, it becomes more and more difficult to make each piece the centre of attention. If you have enough space, present your abstract work as you would expect to see it in a gallery. Try to assign one piece to each wall and hang it where you think it will draw the most attention (at eye level). If you have other smaller works that can complement the main accent, arrange them around.

Light

All paintings, regardless of their style, should be protected from direct sunlight. You run the risk that they may fade over time, or the shiny creations will not be able to reveal their full beauty due to reflections. Also try to keep paintings away from heat sources such as radiators or open fireplaces.

How To Hang Artwork?

There are certain rules that can be followed when hanging artwork, including abstract art. According to art gallery experts, 142 cm is the optimal height, measured from the center of the painting to the floor. This is a calculation based on an average human and their vision coverage with the least amount of effort. Although this is not a must rule for art at home. 142 cm may not be enough to hang a very large painting. Basically, the canvas should be at least 23 centimetres away from the floor. Of course, you can always forget all the theories and rely on your intuition. Art collectors have another piece of advice: “Hang a picture the way you first saw it and fell in love with it.” Forget the furniture, forget everything, hang it where you’ll get the most out of the artwork.
